This is a short story (15,100 words or 55 pages) intended for readers of the Elder Races who enjoy Liam Cuelebre, aka Peanut, as a character.Dragos Cuelebre is no longer the only dragon.Dragos’s son Liam Cuelebre (a.k.a. Peanut) is springing into existence, reminiscent of the first of the Elder Races who were born at the beginning of the world. At just six months of age, he has already grown to the size of a large five-year-old boy. He can read, write in complete sentences, and his math skills are off the chart.A white dragon in his Wyr form, Liam also holds more Power than almost anyone else. In an effort to give him a taste of normality, no matter how fleeting, his parents Pia and Dragos enroll him in first grade. They hope school will help teach Liam how to relate to others, a vital skill that will help him control his growing Power. But school has a surprising number of pitfalls, and relating to others can be a tricky business. When a classmate is threatened, Liam must quickly learn self-control, how to rein in his instincts, and govern his temper, because there’s no doubt about it—he is fast becoming one of the most dangerous creatures in all of the Elder Races.PEANUT GOES TO SCHOOL is part of a three-story series about Pia, Dragos, and Peanut. Each story stands alone, but fans might want to read all three DRAGOS TAKES A HOLIDAY, PIA SAVES THE DAY, and PEANUT GOES TO SCHOOL.

Peanut Goes To School A Short Story of the Elder Races Thea Harrison 9780989972888 Books

This very short story is 6.7 in the Elder Races paranormal romance series, and the third in the Peanut internal trilogy. The focus is back on Peanut, and he's definitely picking up on his parents' morals.

Normally, I'd give this a "3", but I love the message Harrison is sending in this…so, I'm a sucker for child empowerment…

My Take
It's a bit stiff, but a lot of fun to read. It's all the crummy bits of school rolled into one day for Liam, and you can immediately tell that he's not putting up with any crap. He's honest, protective, and extremely observant.

He's also a little boy with a little boy's dreams and fantasies. Wrap them up in a being able to change into a flying dragon, and…whoa, nelly, lol. He's also a little boy with a child's fears.

It's a family with a few upgrades in ability. It's a boy on a fast track of growth, one most moms will be grateful their children aren't going through at quite the same pace.
"It was so charming how Pia's thinking went straight to the justice system, while he thought of things like vivisection and dismemberment."

You will crack up as you read how Liam analyzes situations and decides on what he thinks are the best actions. It still makes me laugh when I re-read what he tells Marika about long-term commitments, lol. We'd all be a lot better off if we did as well as Liam. That comment Hugh makes about cows…well, it's not the sort of statement you expect to make to little boys.

Ooh, I do love Pia's comment to the principal. I suspect it sums up how most teachers and school officials are about bullies.

It's the best of Dragos and Pia all wrapped up in one little boy. You can't help but be proud of him.

The Story
Pia and Dragos are concerned that Peanut is growing too fast, and they're desperate that he have the chance to play with children his own size. So Peanut, er, Liam, is going to school!

In the end, it's just like Spy Wyr, Liam's favorite game — Liam is positive that Uncle Graydon will send him out on mission. And school is exactly that, a mission.

The Characters
Peanut, oops, I mean, Liam Cuelebre, er, Liam Giovanni, is six months old and the size of a five-year-old. Intellect-wise, he's much smarter than most mature adults. He's a dragonshifter like his dad, a white one. And all that eavesdropping has been paying off.

Dragos Cuelebre is a dragonshifter, and the most powerful one in our world. He still hasn't recovered from the accident in "Pia Saves the Day", 6.6. He's mated to a Pia, a dainty and loving lady. Hugh is one of his nannies. Eva is one of Pia's bodyguards.

Graydon and Constantine are some of Dragos' sentinels. Kris is one of Dragos' assistants.

Mrs. Elora Teaberry is Liam's schoolteacher. Hopefully there aren't many like her in the school systems. Doreen Chambers is the principal. Mr. Huddleston is another teacher.

Marika is the Dark Fae girlfriend. Andrew is the ringleader and Joel and Brad are his tools. Perrin is the kid they were picking on.

The Cover
I do love this cover. Peanut is such a cutie in this partial full face close-up with a blurry classroom behind him.

The title is exactly what happens, "Peanut Goes to School".

Peanut Goes To School A Short Story of the Elder Races Thea Harrison 9780989972888 Books Reviews

THE STORY Liam is six months old but is developing incredibly fast and has the body of a five year old but a mind that is years beyond that. Pia and Dragos decide to send him to school in order to give him some socialization with children while he is still one. Liam, however, finds that there are all kinds of dangers in school including mean teachers and bullies. The incredibly powerful Wyr dragon must learn self-control.

OPINION This short story is just adorable. It is incredibly uncomplicated a story. The most interesting part is how Liam has a mixture of a small child and yet wisdom and knowledge far beyond his years. He is clearly an extraordinary child and seeing him develop is wonderful and intriguing. This seemingly simple story has many layers which may be played out in stories yet to come.

WORTH MENTIONING This story is told almost entirely from Liam's point of view.

FINAL DECISION I love this story because I love seeing more of Peanut aka Liam and seeing him come into his own being.

CONNECTED BOOKS PEANUT GOES TO SCHOOL is book number 6.7 in the Elder Races series. It is closely connected with the novella trilogy including DRAGOS TAKES A HOLIDAY and PIA SAVES THE DAY.

STAR RATING I give this story 4.25 stars.
I had a difficult time deciding how to rate this short novella, part three in a three novella story about Dragos, Pia and their son, Liam, set in the Elder Races universe. I love this adorable little family and could read a new story about them every day. Even before the little Peanut came along Dragos and Pia were one of my favorite PNR couples. And Liam? Oh my goodness. This beautiful child is so precocious! These little snippets into his growing up are wonderful to read.

Although this is part three all the stories can be read as stand alone. In Peanut Goes to School Liam heads off to first grade where he encounters a teacher that's difficult to get a along with and bullies. Thea Harrison does a fantastic job of getting into Peanut's head. While he is growing at an unprecedented rate (both physically and mentally) he's still a kid. He's also immensely Powerful and is developing his own unique abilities. This makes him a handful for his parents, but this kid has such a support system!

There were a few things that felt inconsistent for me about this story, which is why it gets three stars. Warning from here on out there be spoilers...

While I think Thea Harrison did a great job of portraying Peanut there was a (ridiculously cute) conversation between him and a Dark Fae girl, Marika. Marika is a third grader but uses the phrases "hella awesome" and "excuse my French." Yeah, kids repeat things but they don't usually know how to use those monkey-see, monkey-do phrases in context. When Marika agrees to be his girlfriend for a week (ah! so cute!) Liam tells another kid, "I'm dating an older woman now." This seemed really out of character even for this highly intelligent kid to say.

The other issue I had with this story was Liam's evil teacher. In a school with other Wyr children and at least a few part Fae children I would assume the school would have teachers who know how to handle these kids. Apparently not. And Dragos and Pia only informing the principal and not Liam's teacher about his true identity was a huge blunder. Really? You know how special your kid is and you didn't tell the woman who will be teaching him and caring for him in the classroom when you have an army of people usually watching him? Really? Sorry, not buying it. As for the nasty teacher while I didn't like her for a villain in this story sometimes bad teachers really do through the cracks. Her behavior was so repulsive, but I still find it difficult to believe that a teacher who would overreact so quickly and shake a child hadn't been investigated or fired yet. End rant.

I did enjoy reading this and will be looking out for Peanut's next adventures. Hopefully Thea Harrison doesn't make us wait long because this kid is growing up fast and I don't want to miss any of it!
